Learning to chain is the first stitch crocheters add to their tool box of stitches. For this tutorial we will be working a basic chain written as a “ch” in your pattern. This chain is not to be confused with a foundation chain and I’ll show you my super secret cheat I have for when I chain too many or not enough. Nobody likes having to rip pout their first row when they are missing one chain.
Crochet the Chain “ch” Stitch
Crochet Supplies Needed
– at least 20 Yards of Medium Worsted Weight Yarn
– a Size J- 6 (10.00 mm) hook We are sizing up a hook for ease of use. Hooks sized G-4 (6.00mm) to K-7 (10.50 mm) are also appropriate sizes and meeting gauge isn’t required for this project.
How to Crochet a Chain “ch” Stitch
This tutorial is written for the right handed makers. I love you lefties I’m fairly ambidextrous but favor my right, I will do my best to bring you left handed resources and update this post in the future.
Step 1: Make a Knot
Take your yarn and make a knot leaving a 7-10 inch tail. I recommend a longer tail for your beginning chain. Some instructions ask for an extra long tail at for seaming.
This generous tail is longer than most people recommend, I do this just incase I need to add to my stitches at the end of my first row. Make sure to check the notes section at the end of this post.

Step 2: Chain your stitches
While holding the yarn with your left hand, and your yarn in the right, yarn over and pull the yarn through the loop on your hook. This is your first chain!
Yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through.
To adjust, pinch the yarn and the hook together, then continue with your work
