The double crochet is a relatively quick crochet stitch that is a staple in many stitch combinations. This is the first stitch I like to each crocheters, I prefer this one because you can complete a project fairly quickly and its great for keeping new crocheters motivated. For this tutorial we will be working the double crochet stitch written as a (dc) in your US and Canadian patterns or as a treble crochet (tr) in Uk patterns.

Crochet the Double Crochet "dc" Stitch
This tutorial is written for the right handed makers. I love you lefties, I’m fairly ambidextrous but favor my right, I will do my best to bring you left handed resources and update this post in the future.
Step 1: Make a Beginning Chain
Chain 23, this is your beginning chain. If you would like a refresher on how to chain check out our blog post on Learn How to Crochet a Chain (ch).
Step 2: Insert Your Hook
With one loop on your hook, yarn over wrapping yarn around your hook and insert your hook into the fourth chain from the hook. Make sure your hook is under two pieces of yarn in the chain. If you feel more comfortable working from the third loop on the back of the chain that is also ok.
Step 3: Yarn Over and Pull Through
Yarn over wrapping the yarn around the hook, or grabbing the yarn with your hook and pull through the chain making a loop. You should now have three loops of yarn on your hook
Step 4: Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops
Yarn Over, again wrapping the yarn around the hook or grabbing the yarn with your hook and pull through two loops. You should now have two loop of yarn on your hook
Step 5: Yarn Over and Pull Through the Remaining Two Loops
Yarn Over, again wrapping the yarn around the hook or grabbing the yarn with your hook and pull through both loops. You should now have one loop of yarn on your hook
Double Crochet Tips
First Double Crochet Stitch of the Second Row
Yay! You completed your first row… now what?
Chain 3 (ch 3), this is your turning chain for row 2. The double crochet turning chain makes your rows even. This chain 3 for at the beginning or the end of a pattern is often a substitution for a stitch, but make sure to clarify this in your pattern directions.
Turn your work, flip it over so your hook is now the furthest to the right.
Insert your hook as you did in step 2 and continue with the steps to complete your next rows. Learn to Double Crochet (dc) is the third lesson in our Beginner Crochet Stitches Series. Subscribe to the blog, for weekly updates and fun project ideas.
