The Extended Half-Double Crochet Stitch often written as Ehdc or Exthdc is another wonderful stitch to add to your crochet repertoire. I like this stitch for summer garments or for items where I don’t want the fabric to be as thick. The extended single crochet adds an extra loop to the beginning of the single crochet making adding a little boost to your traditional half-double crochet.
To follow along with this tutorial you’ll want to be familiar with the following skills:
You’ll also want to have a ball of yarn and a crochet hook. I am using some DK weight yarn and a size G+ 7 (4.50 mm hook)
How to Crochet the Extended Half-Double Crochet (ehdc, ExtHdc)
Step 1
Chain 17 stitches
Step 2
Yarn over and Insert your hook into the 5th ch from the hook, yarn over and pull through a loop, (3 loops on hook)
Step 3
Yarn over and pull through 1 loop, (3 loops on hook)
Step 4
Yarn over and pull the yarn through all 3 loops remaining on the hook
Row 2: Chain 2 and make your next extended single crochet in the same stitch. continue working the extended single crochet to the end.
This stitch can be a little more challenging to keep the stitches uniform. When you are starting out, don’t feel frustrated if you have to rip it out (easier said than done I know). Once you do a few rows you’ll get the muscle memory going.
I have noticed that if I need to use an extended single crochet stitch, I can save time and frustration by making sure I get into the grove with a swatch.
