The single crochet is one of the most common crochet stitches and usually one of the the first stitches crocheters learn. For this tutorial we will be working the single crochet stitch written as a “sc” in your pattern
Crochet the Single Crochet "sc" Stitch
Crochet Supplies Needed
– at least 50 Yards of Medium Worsted Weight Yarn
– a Size J-6 (10.00 mm) hook We are sizing up a hook for ease of use. Hooks sized G-4 (6.00mm) to K-7 (10.50 mm) are also appropriate sizes and meeting gauge isn’t required for this project.
How to Crochet a Single Crochet “sc” Stitch
This tutorial is written for the right handed makers. I love you lefties, I’m fairly ambidextrous but favor my right, I will do my best to bring you left handed resources and update this post in the future.
Step1: Make a Beginning Chain
Chain 11, this is your beginning chain. If you would like a refresher on how to chain check out our blog post on Learn How to Crochet a Chain (ch).
Step 2: Insert Your Hook
Step 3: Yarn Over and Pull Through
Yarn over wrapping the yarn around the hook, or grabbing the yarn with your hook and pull through the chain making a loop. You should now have two loops of yarn on your hook
Step 4: Yarn Over and Pull Through Both Loops
Yarn Over, again wrapping the yarn around the hook or grabbing the yarn with your hook and pull through both loops. You should now have one loop of yarn on your hook
First Single Crochet Completed
First Single Crochet Stitch of the Second Row
Yay! You completed your first row… now what?
Chain 1, this is your turning chain for row 2. The single crochet turning chain helps to make your rows even. This chain for a single crochet is not a substitute for a stitch as in the double crochet, half-double crochet and treble crochet stitches.
Turn your work, flip it over so your hook is now the furthest to the right.
Insert your hook as you did in step 2 and continue with the steps to complete your next rows.
