Welcome to one of my favorite Crochet Stitches! The Half-Double Crochet (hdc) is a good mix between the Single Crochet and the Double Crochet Stitches. This stitch is written as a hdc in your pattern. If you are working in UK terms this stitch is referred to the Half Treble Crochet (htr)
I once you try this stitch try working my Diagonals Afghan Pattern.

Half-Double Crochet Instructions
For this tutorial, you’ll need:
Hook: Size H-8 (5.00 mm)
Yarn: Worsted
We typically use worsted weight yarn for these tutorials because it’s easy to manipulate, if you are struggling with the size try a bulky weight yarn.

Chain 22
Yarn over, and insert the hook into the third stitch from the hook
Yarn over and pull through one loop
Yarn over and pull through all remaining loops on the hook
Continue working the next stitch and finish the row. When finished turn your work and start the second row.
Row 2 begins with a ch. 2. This counts as the first stitch of the next row in most cases, however pay special attention to turns when you are reading a pattern because some designers don’t. If it is counted or not will be indicated in the pattern
Yay you have it down! Next learn how to Double Crochet, how to increase Crochet Stitches and how to Decrease Crochet Stitches.
